Switches

Switches are used to connect multiple devices on the same network within a building or campus. For example, a switch can connect your computers, printers and servers, creating a network of shared resources. The switch, one aspect of your networking basics, would serve as a controller, allowing the various devices to share information and talk to each other. Through information sharing and resource allocation, switches save you money and increase productivity.

Small Business Managed Switches

Flexibility:

A variety of port and speed combinations gives you the freedom to match the best product to your price and performance needs. No matter their size, all Cisco managed switches offer outstanding functionality.

Security:

Advanced security measures keep your network and data safe by only granting access to privileged users only.

Reliability:

Managed switches offer a number of redundancy and quality features to help maximize your network's uptime. Your business can keep moving forward without the hindrances of untimely network disasters or spotty connection issues.

Expandability:

Cisco Small Business Managed Switches support a variety of quality and power protocols that you may not need at first. As your business grows and you're ready for more advanced network deployments, however, these features will be able to handle them.

Small Business Unmanaged Switches

Flexibility:

Cisco Unmanaged Switches operate all along the speed spectrum, offering 10, 100, and 1,000 megabit-per-second connections, depending on the model.

Reliability:

Consistent uptime doesn't require additional management or hardware tweaking. Just attach your network devices and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with having a reliable switch.

Affordability:

A Cisco Small Business Unmanaged Switch is designed with your unique business needs in mind. You don't have to commit extra resources or trained staff to get your switch up and running, and you don't have to exceed your budget to get a premium networking solution.

Routers

Routers, the second valuable component of your networking basics, are used to tie multiple networks together. For example, you would use a router to connect your networked computers to the Internet and thereby share an Internet connection among many users. The router will act as a dispatcher, choosing the best route for your information to travel so that you receive it quickly. Routers analyze the data being sent over a network, change how it is packaged, and send it to another network, or over a different type of network. They connect your business to the outside world, protect your information from security threats, and can even decide which computers get priority over others.

Small Business Routers

VPN:

Virtual private network technology lets your remote workers connect to your network through a secure Internet pathway. They can access their email and files as if they were in the office.

Security:

Built-in firewalls, advanced encryption, and authentication features protect your network from external threats, keeping your business assets safe.

Connectivity:

All Cisco Small Business Routers come with multiple connection options for maximum network expandability. Whether you're using them for an increased number of physical ports or wireless connectivity, these routers are built to deliver advanced connection sharing.

1800 Series Integrated Services Routers

The Cisco 1800 Series ISRs family includes seven models with multiple networking options for local or remote connections, offering features that give your business flexibility for expansion.

Flexible services that grow with your business:

Modular capabilities on Cisco 1841 and Cisco 1861 routers allow flexible choices for WAN interfaces, service options and more.

Integrated WAN backup:

Fixed configuration 1800 routers also enable integrated WAN backup or load balancing through a V.92 analog modem (Cisco 1811) or ISDN S/T Basic Rate Interface (Cisco 1812).

Wireless networking:

Help employees be more productive and collaborate better through access to applications and information from anywhere they work.

Voice:

On select models (Cisco 1861), enjoy advanced communications tools such as call processing, voicemail, automated attendant, and conferencing to respond to customers faster and save money on long-distance charges.

Security:

Reduce business risks associated with viruses and other security threats.

Virtual private networks:

Give remote staff and tele-workers secure access to company assets over a secure connection.

Wireless

A wireless local-area network (LAN) uses radio waves to connect devices such as laptops to the Internet and to your business network and its applications. When you connect a laptop to a WiFi hotspot at a cafe, hotel, airport lounge, or other public place, you're connecting to that business's wireless network.

In the past, some believed wired networks were faster and more secure than wireless networks. But continual enhancements to wireless networking standards and technologies have eroded those speed and security differences.

Small Business Wireless Routers

The Cisco® WRV210 Wireless-G VPN Router (Figure 1) is a VPN router with an integrated wireless access point for small offices and home offices. The 10/100 Ethernet WAN interface connects directly to your broadband DSL or cable modem. The LAN interface consists of a built-in 4-port, full-duplex 10/100 Ethernet switch that can connect up to four devices. The wireless access point supports 802.11b/g and incorporates RangeBooster technology, which utilizes multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) antennas to provide increased coverage and reliability.

The Cisco WRV210 has the advanced security functions needed for business networking, including a stateful packet inspection (SPI) firewall with denial-of-service (DoS) prevention, as well as a VPN engine for highly secure communication between mobile or remote workers and branch offices. It offers support for multiple service set identifiers (SSIDs) and VLANs for traffic separation. The WRV210 implements Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key (WPA2-PSK), WPA2 Enterprise, and Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryption, along with other security features, including MAC-based filtering and the ability to enable and disable SSID broadcasts.

Wireless networking in business environments requires flexibility. The Cisco WRV210 can expand or reduce the area of your wireless network via a wireless distribution system (WDS), which allows you to expand your network by connecting select Cisco standalone access points, without the need for additional wiring. This capability, along with the ability to increase or decrease the RF output power, allows for optimal wireless coverage.

To support voice over IP (VoIP), the Cisco WRV210 has a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) application layer gateway (ALG) and advanced quality of service (QoS) features. SIP-based VoIP data has problems passing through standard firewalls with Network Address Translation (NAT), especially when multiple SIP clients are deployed. The SIP ALG allows this traffic to travel through the router’s firewall. QoS can improve the quality of your voice or video over IP. The WRV210’s support for wireless QoS (Wi-Fi Multimedia [WMM]) and wired QoS (port prioritization) helps maintain consistent voice and video quality throughout your network.

Small Business Wireless Access Points
